Introduction

This report provides an overview of European Union legislation that imposes restrictions on the use of chemical substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). This legislation includes:

  • The RoHS Directive (Directive Directives 2002/95/EC on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment ); and
  • The so-called REACH Regulation (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemical Substances), which as from 1 June 2009 replaced and incorporated Directive 76/769 relating to restrictions on the marketing and use of certain dangerous substances and preparations (the restrictions adopted pursuant to Directive 76/769 are incorporated into Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation).
The Commission has proposed that the RoHS Directive’s scope be extended to include medical devices and monitoring and control instruments.  As of 1 January 2014, the maximum concentration limits would apply also to these products.
