The European Union has published a Directive which restricts the use of PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonates). PFOS is a substance which proved to be persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic to mammalian species in a study by OECD in 2002.
An EU risk assessment done in accordance with the EU legislation on the evaluation and control of the risks of existing substances identified a need to reduce the risks to health and the environment.
