Report - Food contact materials

The basis for legislation setting requirements for food contact materials within the EU is laid down in a so-called framework Directive. This is Directive 89/109/EEC on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs.

The most important aspects of the framework Directive include:

  1. Scope of the Directive

  2. General safety requirements

  3. The decision that for a total of 10 material groups specific requirements should be laid down in separate Directives that fall under the scope of the framework Directive.
